WILL NOT SEEK 3rd TERM

State Senator Edward M. Augustus Jr. (D-Worcester) today announced his decision not to seek a third term in the Massachusetts Senate. Augustus, who in his second term had been named to Senate President Therese Murray’s leadership team as Chair of the Senate Committee on Bills in the Third Reading, said he decided over the year-end holidays to forgo a reelection campaign in order to pursue other professional interests. Augustus, Jr. (D-Worcester) is pleased to announce that the Executive Office of Elder Affairs has awarded councils on aging in 349 cities and towns in Massachusetts formula grants to assist with a specific purpose each municipality’s council applied for. Among those receiving funds was Auburn with $23,504, Grafton with $14,053, Leicester with $10,686, Millbury with $16,705, Upton with $4,576 and Worcester with $195, 351. In their first formal session of the year, the Senate approved legislation that would secure the Commonwealth’s current and future participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) by making the cooperative program law. Governor Deval Patrick signed the RGGI agreement last January, entering Massachusetts into a nine-state coalition plan starting in 2009 to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from larger power plants in the New England and Mid-Atlantic region. On Friday, November 30, Auburn area families can come to Horgan Ice Skating Rink, at 400 Oxford St., to skate and raise money for a great cause. The rink will host four Public Skating sessions that weekend, benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Massachusetts. In all, there will be 70 public skating sessions going on across the state in 24 FMC Arenas operated skating facilities. FMC will donate half of the $4.00 admission to the non-profit foundation that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening conditions. Additional donations will be accepted at the rink during the weekend events. All checks should be made payable to The Make-A-Wish Foundation of MA. The goal is to raise $10,000 in 3 days. The Senate recently voted to beef up the existing gift certificate law by adding new consumer protections, including a $300 fine for violations of the statute, which makes gift certificates redeemable at full face value for a period of seven years without deductions or service fees. The bill would make mortgage fraud a felony and require anyone arranging mortgage loans to be licensed.
